Semi-metallic gaskets

Constructions combining a metal core with a more conformable sealing material for assemblies where pressure, temperature, thermal cycling or mechanical loads exceed the capabilities of a conventional cut gasket.

01

Between soft and all-metal gasket technologies

Semi-metallic gaskets combine the strength and stability of a metal support with the sealing performance of a softer filler or facing, generally graphite, PTFE or mica, depending on the application.

European Sealing Technology supplies four principal constructions:

  • spiral wound gaskets;
  • Kammprofile gaskets;
  • corrugated metal gaskets;
  • metal-jacketed gaskets.

These technologies meet different requirements. Selection depends on flange geometry, pressure, temperature, fluid, available gasket seating stress and the in-service stability of the assembly.

Standard and custom manufacture

EST supplies gaskets to common standards or customer drawings. Large-diameter constructions can be assessed according to gasket type, while our stock of metal sheets and sealing materials enables a prompt response to many enquiries.

03

Our four technologies

Spiral wound gaskets

Alternating windings of V-profiled metal strip and filler material provide good compressibility and recovery. Inner and/or outer rings can be added to suit the flange type and operating conditions.

H₂ READY: spiral wound gaskets from the relevant range are available for hydrogen applications. The applicable construction and documentation are confirmed for each service.

Kammprofile gaskets

A machined metal core with concentric grooves is faced with a sealing material, generally graphite, PTFE or mica. This construction is particularly suitable where good sealing must be achieved with relatively moderate gasket seating stress or where high mechanical robustness is required.

Corrugated metal gaskets

Bare or soft-faced corrugated metal sheet retains good sealing performance despite thermal variations and differential movement, particularly in heat exchangers.

Metal-jacketed gaskets

A metal jacket protects a softer filler. This construction is traditionally used on heat exchangers, pumps, valves and equipment requiring special geometry or internal pass-partition bars.

Specifying the right construction

Information required to specify the solution:

  • flange standard or drawing;
  • dimensions;
  • pressure;
  • temperature;
  • fluid;
  • flange material;
  • pressure class, if applicable;
  • gasket seating stress or bolting type, if known;
  • quantity and required lead time.
