Construction

A corrugated gasket consists of metal sheet formed into concentric corrugations or corrugations adapted to the gasket geometry.

Depending on operating conditions, the core can be:

  • used bare;
  • faced with graphite;
  • faced with PTFE;
  • faced with mica;
  • combined with other soft high-temperature materials.

The combination of corrugations and facing improves gasket conformability and preserves recovery as the load varies.

Typical applications

Heat exchangers are a typical application: thermal expansion of the flanges and temperature cycles can cause radial movement and variations in gasket load.

Corrugated gaskets can then offer several advantages:

  • low relaxation compared with certain softer constructions;
  • good accommodation of thermal cycling;
  • sealing capability at relatively low seating stress with a suitable facing;
  • better tolerance of certain flange imperfections than a conventional metal-jacketed gasket.

These general characteristics must be confirmed against the actual conditions of each assembly.

Metal core

Various sheet thicknesses and metal grades can be supplied depending on the construction, including 304 or 316 stainless steel.

Facing

Graphite is the most common facing. PTFE, mica and other materials may be selected where chemical compatibility, temperature or contamination risk requires them.

Custom manufacture

Gaskets can be manufactured:

  • in circular form;
  • to drawing;
  • to special dimensions;
  • for specific heat exchangers or equipment.
