Why use PTFE in rotary service?
PTFE is used where the application requires:
- a low coefficient of friction;
- good chemical resistance;
- a broad temperature range, depending on the compound;
- low adhesion to the fluid or surface;
- a solution suited to certain high speeds or lightly lubricated operation.
Its mechanical properties differ significantly from those of an elastomer. Profile, compound, energising force and shaft surface finish are therefore critical.
Spring-energised PTFE seals
This family includes PTFE seals with an integral stainless-steel spring. The spring maintains contact force at the sealing lip when fluid pressure is low or variable.
Depending on the exact profile, this construction can suit rotary, oscillating or other motion.

Glydring is primarily associated with hydraulic applications and reciprocating motion; the profile must be confirmed against the movement and operating conditions.
