Operating principle
A metal expansion joint uses one or more corrugated bellows to absorb movement while maintaining the integrity of the system.
Depending on its design, it can accommodate:
- axial movement;
- lateral movement;
- angular movement;
- vibration;
- combined movements.
Correct specification requires an assessment of the installation, as reaction forces, anchors and pipe guides are critical.

- weld ends;
- fixed flanges;
- swivel flanges;
- single or multiple bellows;
- tie rods, gimbals or hinges, depending on the design;
- internal sleeve or liner to suit the fluid and flow velocity.
Materials
Available technical documentation lists various stainless-steel grades, including 304, 316L, 316Ti and 321, with other grades selected according to temperature and corrosion conditions.
