Metal expansion joint
01

Operating principle

A metal expansion joint uses one or more corrugated bellows to absorb movement while maintaining the integrity of the system.

Depending on its design, it can accommodate:

  • axial movement;
  • lateral movement;
  • angular movement;
  • vibration;
  • combined movements.

Correct specification requires an assessment of the installation, as reaction forces, anchors and pipe guides are critical.

02

Configurations

Depending on the requirement:

  • weld ends;
  • fixed flanges;
  • swivel flanges;
  • single or multiple bellows;
  • tie rods, gimbals or hinges, depending on the design;
  • internal sleeve or liner to suit the fluid and flow velocity.
03

Materials

Available technical documentation lists various stainless-steel grades, including 304, 316L, 316Ti and 321, with other grades selected according to temperature and corrosion conditions.

Information required

  • DN / diameter;
  • connections;
  • length;
  • pressure;
  • temperature;
  • fluid;
  • movements;
  • number of cycles;
  • pipe material;
  • presence of anchors and guides;
  • environment.

Let us review your requirements

For a metal expansion joint, please provide the piping drawing or data sheet for the existing unit wherever possible, rather than the nominal diameter alone.
